Celcom collaborates with MPBJ to explore 5G adoption in Petaling Jaya

Celcom Axiata Bhd (Celcom) is moving forward with its 5G journey with Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) on board. To support Petaling Jaya’s intelligent city ambition, Celcom is introducing the adoption of its 5G Intelligent City and Public Safety solution use-cases. On 10th March 2020, all the solutions were showcased in conjunction with MBPJ’s Smart Centre launch.

Idham Nawawi, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom said it remains committed to driving the adoption of 5G technology with the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI solutions, in improving daily operational matters for authority bodies, businesses and agencies across industries.

After the deployment of the country’s first 5G Live Cluster Field Trial in Petaling Jaya, the collaboration with MBPJ will transform daily operations regarding traffic management and public safety by other local councils.

Celcom’s 5G Intelligent City and Public Safety solutions also complement MBPJ’s ambition in creating a smart, sustainable and resilient city for its urban neighbourhoods.

Celcom’s 5G Intelligent City and Public Safety pilot solutions include an Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform powered with analytics capabilities, connecting UHD (ultra high definition) cameras comprising of existing MBPJ’s cameras that are deployed in high traffic and crowd areas.

The videos are streamed live to MBPJ Smart Centre over Celcom 5G network employing mmWave spectrum, enabling the council to improve traffic management with real-time monitoring and allow MBPJ to perform proactive measures towards crime detection and prevention.

The traffic management use case presented by Celcom will enable the local council to effectively manage traffic violations and increase the efficiencies of traffic wardens in managing traffic offenders.

As part of the 5G use case, Celcom also showcased a Mobile Monitoring solution, where a mobile monitoring vehicle connected via 5G is streaming live video feeds to the Smart Centre.

This solution will have the potential of providing a quick solution to enhance monitoring of open space or area, as well as public events, which in return may act as a visual hindrance for possible offenders when parked at targeted areas.

Besides that, Celcom is also working closely with several industry partners towards building a strong ecosystem to drive successful commercialisation of 5G use-cases.

“A collaborative environment across industries will be the way forward towards the development of a sustainable ecosystem. Therefore, we welcome more collaborations across industries as we work towards innovative daily operations with 5G and IoT technology.”

Idham further elaborated, “Celcom will continuously strive to accelerate the digitalisation of businesses towards building a sustainable digital ecosystem, creating a ‘win-win-win’ situation which will benefit the industry, rakyat and achieves the nation’s digital aspirations.”
