Malaysia’s First Commercial NB-IoT Service launched by Maxis

MAXIS announced the launch of the first commercial Narrowband-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) service in Malaysia on 16th April 2019.

Currently, Maxis is activating its NB-IoT network in selected areas within key IoT market centers, such as KLCC, Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, Penang, Kuching, Putrajaya, and Johor Bahru.

Maxis will offer NB-IoT solutions and promote the development of the local ecosystem through sharing of global practices and the curation of the best in breed solutions as part of the launch.

Businesses will be able to deploy industrial IoT applications to form new data streams, enabling actionable insights by connecting devices like sensors.

NB-IoT, a dedicated network for IoT technology, brings 5G-like capabilities for lower bandwidth applications, and has the capability to support millions of connected things which uses very low power and therefore lends itself to delivering a long battery life.

The technology will boost Big Data and enable advanced data analytics to help make decisions in areas such as lowering of costs, improved efficiency and new business prospects.

To ensure this project becomes a success, Maxis, as Vodafone’s preferred IoT partner in Malaysia, will be leveraging on its existing collaboration with the company by having access to its global experience in NB-IoT deployment across various countries.

Vodafone will provide its customers and partner’s access to the world’s largest, international, NB-IoT network and Maxis will be able to benefit from it.

With Vodafone’s platform, Maxis will be able to deliver technology for businesses in Malaysia looking to implement NB-IoT services in their operations.

Presently, Maxis NB-IoT is being piloted in several industries such as smart metering and environmental monitoring. There are also solutions in Maxis IoT Innovation Lab that include smart lighting, parking monitoring, smoke alarms and more.

With this new technology, the possibilities are endless for key stakeholders such as government, state councils and Malaysian businesses in the areas of utilities, agriculture and Smart Cities.

Maxis set up its very own IoT Innovation Lab back in 2018 to accelerate adoption and to act as a bridge between Maxis’ Enterprise customers, device manufacturers and solutions providers.

IoT Innovation Lab provides a free testing facility which helps Enterprise solution providers to penetrate into the market quicker and for customers to validate their solutions before it goes out into the field.

Maxis will also assist in the acceleration of NB-IoT adoption through device and solution certification. The lab is being utilized as an experiential showcase for Enterprise customers to witness demonstrations of fully tested NB-IoT solutions.
